Make Things Count: Start Now

written by BRICE HOGAN | LIFE, MOTIVATION

Last October I listened to a talk that changed my life 1% Better. I knew I wanted my life to matter, most people do. In fact, as you're reading this you might be considering the same thing.

One way or another, we want to have an impact on people and, if you're ambitious, the world.

To make an impact, we must be willing to act. Action will always create results. But you have to start. Don't hesitate to start.

How come with all our willingness to change the world and have an impact, we pull back, we wait?

Here are some common things we tell ourselves

  • I need to learn more

  • It's not the right time

  • I don't have the money

The past is riddled with excuses of many with grand dreams and visions to change themselves or change the world.

But they never started.

Make it Count and the Double your Age Test

Jeff Bezos in 2010 gave the commencement speech at Princeton University and talked about looking back on your life

“When you think about the things that you will regret when you’re 80, they’re almost always the things that you did not do. They’re acts of omission. Very rarely are you going to regret something that you did that failed and didn’t work or whatever?" (1)

I can identify with this a little, I am not 80 yet and still have some time to go but there are a few things I look back and wish I had started.

The clock is always ticking you can never buy time back you need to make it count now.

The Double Your Age Test

Here is another way to think about doing something now and making things count

How old are you?

Take your age and double it. If you are 30 double it to 60. If you're 40 double it to 80. Now think about this how many of you know people who passed away before that age?

We all have life and the shortness of it affects us all. It could be snapped up in a second.

Steve Jobs liked to say. “If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you'll be right. Every morning I looked in the mirror and asked myself: If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I do today?"(2)

So, here is my question to you: What will you do with the time you have now?

If you are determined, even if you aren't, start no, make things count now. Yesterday was yesterday. Today is today and you can take a step in a positive direction and start on something.

We often think we need everything perfect to start something, but you don't. You don't have time to wait.

Give everything you have and in the process, it will make you a better, stronger person and able to help others and you will be able to make an impact on the world.
